Cute catIf you’re new to owning a cat, you might be wondering about what’s best to feed your new friend. After all, nutrition is the key to a healthy and happy cat.

It’s important to remember that cats are carnivores. As such, they need to eat meat to stay healthy. Keeping a supply of meat rich in thiamine (vitamin B1) is necessary. Australia’s Shop4Pets shares with us more tips on what to feed your cat to keep them healthy.

Opt for Thiamine-Rich Food

Thiamine converts carbohydrates into energy, and cats require it from their food. If they don’t get sufficient amounts of Thiamine, it might put them in a coma. Poor-quality pet foods or cooking pet food in water may increase the risk of a thiamine deficiency.

Cat owners should also avoid giving their pet raw fish. It contains an enzyme that that can disrupt the absorption of thiamine.

Choose Grain-Free Foods

Grain isn’t naturally part of a cat’s diet, and like humans, some cats are allergic to it. Some cat foods contain very little meat and bulk out their food with wheat, rice, and cornmeal.

Feeding your cat small amounts of vegetables is okay. Cats need some fiber (which is why they eat grass). It helps prevent the formation of hairballs. The varieties of cat food that contain some veg are, therefore, beneficial.

Know Which Treats Are Toxic to Them

Be careful when feeding cats human foods as treats. It might actually be hazardous. Chocolate, for example, can be deadly to a cat because it contains theobromine. When digesting chocolate, humans can convert this toxic substance into a harmless one. That’s why we can enjoy these sweet treats. Cats, however, cannot convert theobromine. It can cause seizures or heart problems. Onions and garlic are also a no-no.

Pet owners can make their own healthy pet treats by cooking tiny bits of organic liver (not too much, though, because it’s high in vitamin A), fish or eggs. These should only be occasional treats.
